i hate art
2024 - 2025
i hate art is a series of artist books assembled with found and gifted documents from fellow artists, scrap collage materials, and printed family photographs. The creative process embraces a philosophy of "hating" art, specifically the institutionalization of BIPOC artists through cultural and historical erasure, and privileged definitions of professionalism in the fine art and design industry. The grunge-inspired visuals utilize yellow memo pad paper, linen thread, clips, and plastic. Scribbles in crayon and graphite express a childlike material exploration with taking up space on a page, as well as adult frustrations with visual art. Chinese Mandarin quotes a hatred for art and "place." This use of language and phrasing is considered because of the euro-centric teachings received from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where the artist navigates a craving for BIPOC representation, the burdens of financial stress, and severe clinical depression.
