mom’s busy (2023)
artist statement:
Mom’s Busy is an artistic tribute to my mother. My mother is a support planner who works from her home-office, and my father is a lover of all things grunge. This combination of deep, scattered thinking and a knack for yellow memo pad paper has lead me to tell stories about human relations and the lack of. During the creation of this piece, I realized how much my mother has influenced me, not just as her daughter but as an artist who makes and thinks. We both speak in the language of discarded shopping receipts, mailing envelopes, discolored highlighters, and staple removers. We also struggle with technology even though we depend on them for our professions. Through the process of manipulating objects and materials that I have always had a strange fascination with, I was able to recognize the relationship between things that I thought did not exist. This was my first project intentionally exploring the concept of material inheritance.
Found objects, archived photographs, mixed media collage on cardboard.
